Willie Nelson turns 93 this year. He made his first public appearance in six months at the Luck Reunion in March, stepped up to the microphone, and reminded everyone why the conversation starts and ends with him. On July 4th, he is bringing the Picnic back to Austin with a lineup that makes you wonder what took everyone else so long to figure out what he already knew in 1973.
About Willie Nelson & the 4th of July Picnic
That was the year Nelson staged the first Fourth of July Picnic in Dripping Springs — a gathering that put Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, and Doug Sahm on the same bill. They called it the Hillbilly Woodstock. The name fit because it captured the philosophy: country music belongs to the outlaws who write it, not the programmers who decide what gets played. Nelson has been proving that point on every Fourth of July since.
The man was already a songwriter’s songwriter before any of it. “Crazy” went to Patsy Cline. “Night Life” and “Hello Walls” got him to Nashville. He left Nashville, came back to Texas, and built something the radio charts still haven’t fully caught up to. The catalog runs from Red Headed Stranger to Stardust to Phases and Stages — each record a different room, none of them the same. Rodney Crowell, who appears on this bill, wrote “Til I Gain Control Again” and handed it to Willie before it became a cornerstone of Emmylou Harris’s catalog, too. That is the company the Picnic tends to keep.
The 2026 bill runs as part of the broader Outlaw Music Festival Tour. Billy Strings — who typically sells out arenas independently and is exclusive to this Austin date — shares the billing with Wilco, Sheryl Crow, Lukas Nelson, Margo Price, Rodney Crowell, Stephen Wilson Jr., and Lily Meola. Fireworks close the evening.
About Germania Insurance Amphitheater
Germania Insurance Amphitheater holds 14,000 and sits at 9201 Circuit of the Americas Blvd in Austin’s Del Valle area. Covered pavilion seating runs alongside a general admission lawn. The Picnic moved here in 2015 and has not looked back. Access is straightforward via I-35 and Highway 71.
