Per Gessle spent more than three decades writing Roxette songs. Marie Fredriksson died in 2019, but the catalog â “The Look,” “Listen to Your Heart,” “Joyride,” “It Must Have Been Love” â didn’t go anywhere. Gessle rebuilt the touring unit with Lena Philipsson up front and spent 2025 running 43 dates across South Africa, Australia, South America, and Europe before scheduling the 14-city North American run. The crowds responded. Austin gets the Texas stop on Friday, September 25, at Germania Insurance Amphitheater.
About the Show
The occasion is four decades since Pearls of Passion, Roxette’s 1986 debut, and the anniversary has generated a companion program for 2026: remastered music videos, remixes, reissues, and previously unreleased archive footage. The touring is built around the catalog’s staying power. Gessle chose Philipsson for the front-of-stage vocal role, and their connection predates this revival: he co-wrote her first major Swedish hit in 1986, the same year Roxette launched. She’s described joining the project as “thrilled, excited and honored,” and has been “overwhelmed by the reception from the crowds” through the 2025 touring cycle. Gessle’s framing: “This is all about my Roxette songs, this huge bundle of music and lyrics I’ve been writing for well over three decades.”
The setlist draws from the catalog that made Roxette the standard-bearer for Swedish pop-rock on US radio: “The Look,” “Listen to Your Heart,” “Joyride,” and “It Must Have Been Love,” which contributed to the Pretty Woman soundtrack in 1990 and has since crossed one billion Spotify streams, placing the band alongside ABBA as the only Swedish artists with pre-2000 releases in Spotify’s Billions Club. Per press coverage, Roxette holds the record for most US Billboard No. 1 singles among Swedish acts. The 14-city North American run, which opened September 10 in Michigan and closes October 9 in Washington, follows a full European summer tour. Supporting the Austin date are Taylor Dayne and Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets, both special guests throughout the run. The Austin show follows the Dallas date at Dos Equis Pavilion on September 24.
