Most people found wave to earth through “seasons” — a song that crossed 500 million Spotify streams by turning up in the right playlists, not through the right arena tours. Now the South Korean indie rock trio is booking Radio City Music Hall and the Greek Theatre, and on October 9 the Pieces Tour hits 713 Music Hall in Houston.
About the Show
Daniel Kim (vocals, guitar), John Cha (bass), and Dong Q (drums) formed in Seoul in 2018, when Kim and Dong Q were playing together in a high school worship band. They debuted the following year with an EP called wave and built a catalog of lo-fi indie rock laced with jazz and surf-rock touches, the kind of intimate music that tends to work at close range, in headphones, in quiet rooms. “Bad,” from the 2023 debut album 0.1 flaws and all, reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Viral 50 Global Chart. The 2024 EP play with earth! 0.03 debuted at No. 5 on Spotify’s Top Albums Debut Global Chart. The band has performed at Lollapalooza across multiple continents; a December show at Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane sold out, grossing $230,092 off 2,928 tickets.
Bad pieces, released August 7, is the first full album since that EP. The title draws from John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1969 Bed-In for Peace. Kim has explained his vision for the record: “When people listen to this album, I want them to feel like they are in a state of peace within the space where they’re listening to it.” He also describes it as the most experimental work the band has made, built on fresh instrumentation and “closer to the essence of wave to earth than ever before.” The lead single is “heaven and hell.” No support act has been announced for the Houston date. The Pieces Tour spans 21 North American cities before concluding October 11 in Irving, Texas.
Venue & Logistics
713 Music Hall is at 401 Franklin Street in downtown Houston. At 5,000 capacity, it’s a significant step up for a band that built its audience from the streaming side rather than the touring circuit. Songkick logs wave to earth’s last Houston show as one year prior, making this a return visit.
