Álvaro Díaz came up through the SoundCloud underground before the mainstream had a category for what he was doing. The Puerto Rican rapper was layering 808s over plena rhythms and running dembow through experimental chord progressions while his contemporaries in Latin urban music stayed inside the lines. He described himself as “the weird brother with the 808s and the synths” — the one who felt left out because everyone else was coloring from the same palette. His previous album Sayonara landed on Rolling Stone’s Best Latin Albums list and earned multiple Latin Grammy nominations, marking his first real moment in the mainstream. OMAKASE, released May 2026, confirmed the direction: No. 1 in more than 16 countries, No. 1 on Spotify’s Top Albums Debut Global chart on release day. What he built in the underground turned out to be exactly right.
About the Show
Díaz brings the OMAKASE TOUR to 713 Music Hall on Friday, October 30. Live Nation promotes the 33-city run, which covers Latin America and the U.S., opening October 14 in Chicago at the Riviera Theatre and closing November 7 in San Jose. No support acts are listed. The album is described by Díaz as “his most evolved work to date.”
The album’s structure follows its title directly. Díaz conceived it as a multi-course meal: the opening section hits with hard raps calling back his underground days; the middle, what he calls “El sazon,” flips beats across reggaeton, dembow, and plena; the closer, “LAULTIMACENA,” is framed as a family table, with audio of his late grandmother, his grandfather, and his mother’s pre-meal prayer woven into the track. The album also carries “Pienso En Ti,” built on a beat from producer Milkman, a close friend who died in February 2026 before the album’s release. Features include Latin Mafia, Jesse Báez, Tainy, Rauw Alejandro, and Akrilla.
Díaz told Vibe the album grew out of a rough stretch — a broken relationship, grief, a Latin Grammys night where the wins didn’t come. “It was like a bunch of mixed feelings,” he said. “Really felt like an omakase of emotions, almost like a collage.” He went back into the studio after that.
