Elliott Kozel has made records with Rosalía, Björk, and SZA. He doesn’t typically end up behind the boards for indie rock bands running their own headlining tours. That production credit on Melodie — Slow Pulp’s third album, due September 18 on ANTI- Records — signals something shifted for the Chicago quartet, and the Dallas date on their fall North American run is a chance to hear what that sounds like in a live room.
About the Show
Slow Pulp formed in Madison, Wisconsin in the mid-2010s and relocated to Chicago in 2018, where they built a catalog critics have struggled to classify. Drawing from ’90s alt-rock and the 2000s indie wave, Emily Massey (vocals, guitar), Henry Stoehr (guitar), Alex Leeds (bass), and Teddy Mathews (drums) arrived at something that blends power-pop, acoustic elements, and expansive arrangements. Their resume includes opening slots for Pixies, Death Cab for Cutie, Alvvays, Lucy Dacus, and The Postal Service; a Late Show with Stephen Colbert appearance; festival plays at Lollapalooza. ANTI- Records’ bio credits them with establishing themselves in indie rock’s “highest echelon” with their second album, Yard. Now they’re headlining on this run.
Melodie is the record where something changed at the production level. Kozel joins Stoehr behind the boards for the first time; Stoehr had previously self-produced the band’s work. The result, per ANTI- Records, “balances power-pop euphoria, acoustic heartbreak, and the ocean of sound between them.” The album reflects on past relationships and creative renewal; Stoehr contributed five of the 11 tracks, reconnecting with Massey on co-writes. The opening single “Better Man,” written by Stoehr, runs on energetic percussion and anthemic guitar underneath Massey’s vocals. Bassist Leeds has described the album’s arc as “the sense of a full circle, tapping back into things and transforming through them.”
The Dallas date falls about three weeks into the band’s fall run, which stretches October 16 through November 21 and routes through Austin, Houston, Atlanta, and the East Coast before closing with a Chicago Salt Shed headliner the band has called their biggest hometown show to date. Snuggle opens.

The Echo Lounge & Music Hall, a 1,000-capacity theater in Dallas’s Design District, hosts the show from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
