Skillet’s Comatose came out in October 2006 and made the Memphis band a crossover name in Christian rock â some of those tracks have never been performed live. Twenty years on, the “Comatose: 20 Years, Still Screaming Tour” is making good on them. The Aztec Theatre gets the San Antonio date, November 6.

AllMusic once described Skillet as rockers who strike “a balance between metalfest headliners and the worship band stage, delivering hard-charging anthems for secular and spiritual audiences alike.” That balance is why Comatose, the band’s sixth studio album (released October 3, 2006), landed as hard as it did. The album earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards and was the last record made with founding drummer Lori Peters before her 2008 departure. John Cooper, who built the band from Memphis in 1996, later said Comatose “would change the trajectory of the band’s career.” Two decades later, “Monster,” from a subsequent release, has cleared four billion global streams and is the only Christian artist track to reach one billion Spotify streams.
The run launches September 30 in Schenectady, New York and wraps November 10 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. San Antonio, where Skillet hasn’t played in roughly two years, falls near the end of that stretch. The setlist will lean heavily into the Comatose catalogue, including “Whispers in the Dark,” “The Last Night,” and “Better Than Drugs,” and will include tracks from the album the band has never performed live. Cooper described the direction of new music recorded alongside the tour: “The music kept getting heavier, and I said, ‘We’ve got to go all-in.'” A new single, “Scream,” dropped July 10; Cooper said the song takes on the current media environment: “I don’t think I’m the only one who’s noticing the volatility of the world and how social media is a cesspool where people are constantly yelling at each other.” No supporting act has been announced for this date. The current four-piece is John Cooper (lead vocals, bass), Korey Cooper (rhythm guitar, keys), Jen Ledger (drums, vocals), and Seth Morrison (lead guitar).
