Isaac Brock wrote his way through grief and came out the other side with An Eraser and a Maze, Modest Mouse’s eighth studio album, their first in five years, and their first independent release after more than two decades with Epic Records. Released June 5 on Glacial Pace and Virgin Music, it’s also the first record the band has made since founding drummer Jeremiah Green died on December 31, 2022. Brock’s response wasn’t to scale back. He pulled six songs he’d originally earmarked for his Ugly Casanova side project into the full-band record and expanded the scope to fifteen tracks. Rock Cellar called the result “every era of Modest Mouse coexisting at once.” Brock, in his own words: “For this one, I turned off my filter and just let it all happen.”
About the Show
Modest Mouse plays Boeing Center at Tech Port on Saturday, October 17 with Caroline Rose opening. The show closes a three-night Texas run (Austin on October 15, Irving on October 16) before the tour moves west to Phoenix and the West Coast. Rock Cellar noted multiple dates on this fall run have sold out. Rose is a Grammy-nominated artist whose 2023 album The Art of Forgetting earned a nod for Best Recording Package; her catalog runs from folk through Americana to sharp-humored indie pop, and she isn’t just filling the slot. The band touring An Eraser and a Maze is a rebuilt one: following Green’s passing, Modest Mouse brought in Simon O’Connor on guitar, Damon Cox on drums, and Keith Karman on keyboards. The record was co-produced by Jackknife Lee (U2, The Killers), Suzy Shinn (Weezer), and Brock, with Justin Raisen contributing additional production. Lead single “Look How Far…”, the band’s first new music since The Golden Casket in 2021, features drummer Janet Weiss, formerly of Sleater-Kinney. Modest Mouse formed in Washington state in 1993 and broke into mainstream radio with “Float On” from 2004’s Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which sold more than one million copies.
