The “Martin Had a Dream” tour title tells you something about Martin Amini before you’ve heard a single punchline. It’s ambitious, a little cheeky, and freighted with implications he clearly wants you to sit with for a moment. That’s his whole move — he sets up the premise, then delivers. Amini brings that theater tour to San Antonio’s Aztec Theatre on Saturday, November 14, at 7:00 PM.
About Martin Amini
Amini grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland — raised in what he describes as a culturally diverse, divorced household, with an Iranian father and a Bolivian mother — and he’s built an entire comedic architecture out of that particular intersection. It’s not heritage mining that reads like a sociology lecture. He’s sharper than that, more interested in the humor that lives inside contradictions than in explaining those contradictions to the audience.
His 2020 special Son of An Ice Cream Man, taped at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., put those instincts on full display. His 2024 YouTube special I’m Transcending, filmed at the Lincoln Theatre in D.C. and directed by comedian Erik Griffin, pushed further — executive produced alongside Matt Rife and Christina Shams, the special mines his dual cultural inheritance with what Deadline called a meditation on growing up between two worlds. That it also lands its jokes is the point.
He’s been circulating through the right rooms for a while. He opened for Trevor Noah, Jerrod Carmichael, and Hasan Minaj — the kind of apprenticeship that suggests the major venues took notice before the wider public did. He made his television debut on TruTV’s Laff Tracks and landed on Thrillist’s Best Undiscovered Stand-Up Comedian list. He also founded Room 808, a comedy and jazz club in Washington’s Petworth neighborhood — the Washington Post named it Best Comedy Club in D.C. in 2024. A comedian who builds his own room while still building his career is a comedian who takes the form seriously.
The “Martin Had a Dream” theater tour is 80-plus dates deep through December 2026. Amini’s headlining sets typically run 45 to 70 minutes, preceded by a host and feature act; plan on the full evening running 90 to 110 minutes.
The Aztec Theatre
The Aztec Theatre is one of San Antonio’s most distinctive rooms — a 1,477-capacity landmark at 104 N. St. Mary’s Street with Meso-American décor intact from the original building. The acoustics hold well for the spoken word, which makes it a natural fit for the theater-comedy format. The venue operates cashless for concessions and merchandise; clear bags no larger than 12"×6"×12", or a small clutch, are required. Arrive early for security screening.
