The name they carry was given to them by a U.S. immigration agent in Soledad, California. The year was 1967. Four brothers from Rosa Morada, Sinaloa — Hernán, Luis, Jorge, and Eduardo Hernández — were being processed for a prison appearance when the agent dubbed them “los tigres del norte,” the tigers of the north. They kept it.
That origin story is worth sitting with before October 9, when Los Tigres del Norte bring their current tour to Boeing Center at Tech Port on the grounds of what used to be Kelly Air Force Base. A band named by a border agent, at a venue built on former federal military land, in the city that straddles everything — that’s not irony, that’s just San Antonio.
Boeing Center is a 3,100-capacity theater on Port San Antonio, opened in 2022, and it is a smaller room than this band typically plays. They sold out Madison Square Garden on the La Lotera Tour — 13,618 tickets, $1.3 million gross. The Boeing Center’s event page is listing this run as the Los Tigres del Mundo Tour, which may indicate a rebranded fall leg of the same campaign; regardless, a room this size means the corridos are going to hit differently.
Los Tigres del Norte are the norteño band — the act that helped define the genre’s capacity for social commentary, turned “Contrabando y Traición” into a phenomenon in 1970, and built a catalog across 60-plus albums and 500-plus songs that reads like a chronicle of the Mexican and Mexican-American experience across the last half century. “De qué me sirve el dinero si estoy como prisionero” — what good is money to me if I’m like a prisoner — is from “La Jaula de Oro,” and there is not a more precise lyric in the norteño canon for what that experience has felt like for millions of people on both sides of a border that keeps moving.
The Hernández brothers have earned five Latin Grammys, a 2007 Latin Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2014, the first Hollywood Walk of Fame star ever given to a norteño band. They put in the 2011 MTV Unplugged set — the first regional Mexican act to do so. Thirty-five million units sold. Fifty-nine years in.
