Jack Johnson plays Germania Insurance Amphitheater on Saturday, August 29 — his first Austin show since 2022, and by the booking, it’s clear nobody’s treating this as a quiet return. Germania is 14,000 capacity, the largest outdoor amphitheater in Central Texas, and Johnson is headlining it on a 43-date North American run that started in June and doesn’t let up until October. That’s the kind of schedule that signals a real relaunch, not a one-off.
The occasion is the SURFILMUSIC Tour 2026, built around Johnson’s most ambitious project in years: a documentary film and a companion double album released May 15 on Brushfire Records. The documentary, directed by Emmett Malloy, premiered earlier this year and features Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Gerry Lopez, G. Love, and Ben Harper. The companion double release splits into a SURFILMUSIC Soundtrack — new collaborations including the single “Drink the Water” with Swiss-Ecuadorian instrumental guitar duo Hermanos Gutiérrez — and 4-Tracks, an archival collection of early unreleased recordings.
About Jack Johnson
Johnson grew up on the North Shore of Oahu, the son of legendary surfer Jeff Johnson, and came within a wipeout of a completely different career — at 17, he was the youngest finalist at the Pipeline Masters before a serious injury redirected his path. He went to UC Santa Barbara for film studies, directed surf documentaries, then broke through with Brushfire Fairytales in 2001. The records that followed — On and On, In Between Dreams, Sleep Through the Static — built a catalog that sounds deceptively simple: fingerpicked acoustic guitar, understated vocals, campfire warmth that sticks without trying. His influences trace to Dylan, Cat Stevens, Marley, and Al Green, but the synthesis is distinctly his own. He founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation and has worked with Eddie Vedder, Jackson Browne, and Willie Nelson on conservation efforts over the years; Sleep Through the Static was recorded entirely on solar energy, which stops being a marketing note when the whole catalog is built around exactly that philosophy.
The Venue
Germania Insurance Amphitheater sits inside Circuit of the Americas’ 1,300-acre sports and entertainment complex on Austin’s south side. It opened in November 2012 — previously Tower Amphitheater, then Austin360 Amphitheater — and operates as the region’s largest outdoor venue, with 6,700 reserved seats, 1,700 configurable floor positions near the stage, and lawn GA beyond. Capacity runs to 14,000. For a Jack Johnson summer night, the lawn is half the show.
