For Amen, Gautier Serre sourced instruments most albums don’t know how to spell: a dung-chen (a nine-foot Buddhist ceremonial horn), an old saw repurposed as an industrial gong, a blacksmith’s anvil, and an excavator. He also recorded a live choir inside a church, and he left one baroque piece completely unadorned by distortion. The result, Igorrr’s fifth studio album, is what happens when two decades of threading Bach and Chopin through Cannibal Corpse and Meshuggah arrives somewhere heavier than any of those reference points alone. Igorrr plays the Aztec Theatre on Wednesday, October 7.
About the Show
Amen, released in fall 2025 on Metal Blade Records, anchors Igorrr’s North American Tour 2026 — a 24-date run from September 18 through October 20. Serre describes it as the project’s darkest work: “such a very weighty and solemn vibe that has never been reached before in Igorrr.” Guest spots on the record went to Scott Ian, Trey Spruanca, and Mike Leon.
From Chopin and Domenico Scarlatti to Aphex Twin and Taraf de Haidouks, Serre’s influence map helps explain how Amen ended up where it did. Per the artist’s own site, Igorrr has maintained “a cohesive universe records after records” through all of it. When asked for a genre descriptor, his answer: “I didn’t see one, even through the years.”
Live, Igorrr is a five-piece: Jb Le Bail and Marthe Alexandre on vocals, Remi Serafino on drums, Martyn Clément on guitar, and Serre on machines. What began as Serre’s solo project expanded into a collective after signing to Metal Blade in 2017; the artist site says the shift brought “a new level of intensity into the group live representations.”
The supporting lineup is worth the early arrival. Secret Chiefs 3 — Trey Spruanca’s long-running instrumental project — opens alongside VMO (Violent Magic Orchestra), an Osaka-based experimental electronic black metal group. Three acts on one bill with no genre in common, and none of them apologizing for it.
Serre on returning to North America: “We’ve been waiting to come back to the US for a long time now. The last tour was so intense that we’ve been extremely impatient for the opportunity to play for the people there again.”
