When Grateful Shred wrapped up Might As Well — their June 2025 debut on their own Liberty Hair Farm Records — they had made a record out of eight Grateful Dead songs that the Dead themselves never formally put on a studio album. “Cassidy,” “Jack Straw,” “Lazy River Road,” “To Lay Me Down”: material that lived for decades on live tape, now given a proper treatment by a Los Angeles six-piece that got into all of this because they loved the songs and couldn’t stop playing them. That’s a specific project, not a tribute routine, and the November 6 date at The Echo Lounge & Music Hall is as good a reason as any to see what they’ve actually built.
About the Show
Grateful Shred started in 2015 when co-founders Austin McCutchen and Dan Horne threw together a Dead set at a festival after McCutchen’s regular bandmates couldn’t make it. Their earliest wide exposure came in 2017, when an impromptu parking lot set outside the Hollywood Bowl was shut down by police mid-performance; the video circulated, the audience grew, and the touring schedule followed. JamBands.com has described their approach as a “beachfront cowboy” take on the Dead’s catalog, which gets at the sun-bleached harmonies and freewheeling improvisation that run through both the live show and Might As Well. Bassist and pedal steel player Dan Horne says the goal is simpler than it might sound: “We’re trying to keep the spirit alive. And, the main focus of that spirit is for us just to be ourselves.” Vocalist and harpist Mikaela Davis — who has worked with Bon Iver and Lake Street Dive — pushes back on the tribute-act frame even further: “It’s not like being in a cover band, it’s really like you’re learning this material, studying it.” The Dallas show falls mid-run in a four-city Texas sweep: San Antonio on November 5, Dallas on November 6, Austin on November 7, Houston on November 8. No support act has been announced for this date.
