Gary Clark Jr. comes back to the Aztec on Friday, August 28 — the middle night of a three-date Texas sweep that runs through the Majestic in Dallas the night before and the Buddy Guy Blues Festival in The Woodlands the night after. For a guitarist at Clark’s level, that routing says something. He hasn’t outgrown his home state. He’s not playing from a distance. And he clearly knows which rooms still feel right for what he does.
The Aztec Theatre is one of those rooms. At 1,477 capacity, it’s a theater — close enough to make the guitar work matter, big enough to move. Clark has played the Aztec four times before. He knows the space. The space knows him.
About Gary Clark Jr.
Clark is an Austin native who started performing at Antone’s at age 15 after meeting the club’s founder, Clifford Antone. He now co-owns the venue — a fact that says everything about his relationship to Austin and to the scene that raised him. The sold-out Antone’s residency he wrapped earlier this year wasn’t nostalgia. It was a working artist going back to the room where he made his name. His summer is stacked: Newport Jazz Festival, Bourbon & Beyond, and Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival in Austin all fall within this same touring arc.
He’s a four-time Grammy winner: Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Please Come Home,” and Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Music Video for “This Land” — the title track off his 2019 album that debuted at #6 on the Billboard 200, his third consecutive Top 10 entry. His most recent record, JPEG RAW (2024), runs the genre map in every direction: rock, blues, R&B, hip-hop, soul, country, jazz, electronic, traditional African music. It features Stevie Wonder, George Clinton, and samples from Thelonious Monk and Sonny Boy Williamson. Clark has been teasing new material with a heavier blues-and-soul lean that could debut during this run.
