Eslabon Armado’s core sound is sad sierreño: lean, stringed, lyrically unsparing. Pedro Tovar writes the songs, and he started early — composing at 10 years old, watching his father do the same informally in Patterson, California. Their new album Nocturno, released June 25, is a deliberate push against that familiar baseline. Tovar has described the sound as “more upbeat, more in your face,” a shift the Amor Nocturno Tour is taking to 713 Music Hall on Saturday, August 22.
About the Show
Eslabon Armado formed in 2017 as children of Mexican immigrants in Patterson, California, playing the sierreña music their parents’ generation brought with them. Pedro and Brian Tovar’s father named the group: Eslabón Armado means “a united chain.” The current lineup is Pedro Tovar Jr. on vocals and 12-string guitar, Brian Tovar on bass, Damián Pacheco on requinto, and Ulises González on acoustic guitar.
DEL Records founder Ángel Del Villar discovered them in 2020, and they released their debut Tu Veneno Mortal that same year, entering the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart at No. 9. The catalog built quickly from there: six No. 1 studio albums, an eight-times platinum run with Corta Venas, and Desvelado reaching No. 6 on the Billboard 200. Along the way, the band earned two Latin GRAMMY nominations and 10 nominations at the 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Remezcla placed them in the corridos tumbados scene; Billboard described their blend as “sierreño and norteño roots with pop instinct, heart-on-sleeve lyricism and stripped-down production.” Their 2023 collaboration with Peso Pluma on “Ella Baila Sola” became the first Regional Mexican song to reach the Hot 100’s top five, peaking at No. 4 and spending nine weeks at No. 1 on Spotify’s Global chart with more than 1.5 billion streams. Nocturno, the album this tour supports, is Tovar’s attempt to push further: he’s described the new material as aimed for an even split between experimental and more accessible songs. The Amor Nocturno Tour runs 34 North American dates through December 5 in San Diego, with additional Mexico dates scheduled through the fall.
