Emei grew up bilingual, raised on both Chinese pop and Western musicals, placed third on Chinese Idol at 15, studied cognitive science at Yale, and went viral on TikTok with “Late to the Party” in 2022. That’s a résumé that could go several directions. Night at the Opera, her EP released June 12 on Atlantic Records, picks the most interesting one: a deliberate, confident return to the theatrical instincts she’d been banking since she was a teenager performing for television audiences.

Emei brings the Night at the Opera Tour to The Echo Lounge & Music Hall on Tuesday, October 27. No support act is listed. The EP runs five tracks and 15 minutes, produced with GRAMMY Award-winner Ricky Reed (Lizzo, Leon Bridges) and GRAMMY Award-winning songwriter Justin Tranter (Chappell Roan, Selena Gomez), with additional production from Nate Mercereau (Andre 3000, Leon Bridges). The record has a specific self-concept. Emei has described it as “bold, honest, and incredibly fun,” adding that she wanted to “lean into being a theater kid again… you’re going to get all of the pain, emotion, and drama from me.” The EP emerged from a period of personal loss, including her grandmother’s death in 2024, and her framing of the project reflects that: “Right now, I’m the most truthful version of myself. The music is fun, ridiculous, and honest.”
The title single has been called “a theatrical masterclass in alt-pop” and “the 2026 anthem for main character syndrome,” with an aesthetic that blends “high-fashion operatic drama with the raw energy of an indie show.” Before the EP landed, the calling card was “Scatterbrain” (2023), which Spotify named to its Best Pop Songs of 2023 list with 71 million streams, and which appeared in the TV series Off Campus. Emei’s catalog has crossed 250 million Spotify streams. “Noah,” one of the new singles, is the EP’s diss track — she’s acknowledged as much: “If you know me, you know I always slip in a diss track.”
