Alex Lora has been doing this since 1968 — first as Three Souls in My Mind, the Mexico City band that played both the opening and closing sets at Avandaro in 1972, Mexico’s equivalent of Woodstock. After a legal fight over the Three Souls name, Lora rebuilt under El Tri — named for the Mexican tricolor and the slang for the national soccer team — and released Simplemente in 1984. “Triste Canción.” “Metro Balderas.” If you know, you know. Now 71, Lora is still fronting the band, and the Adicto al Rocanrol Tour brings El Tri to 713 Music Hall in Houston on Sunday, November 15 at 8:00 PM.
About El Tri
This is rock en español — not Tejano, not Norteño, not a genre you can file under a single regional tradition. El Tri plays blues-rock and psychedelic rock from Mexico City, with lyrics that go where commercial radio won’t: poverty, corruption, immigration, the AIDS crisis, street children. “Indocumentado,” “Niño Sin Amor,” “El Boogie del SIDA” are not feel-good catalog tracks. They are the kind of songs Lora has always written — for the people no one else writes for — and set to guitar riffs that have filled stadiums. Earlier this year, El Tri drew more than 60,000 fans to Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City.
The current lineup is an eight-piece: Lora on vocals and his signature cream-and-black maple bass, Oscar Zarate and Eduardo Chico on guitars, Carlos Valerio on bass, Lalo Toral on piano, Ramon Perez on drums, Rafael Salgado on saxophone and harmonica, and Chela Lora on backing vocals. Salgado’s saxophone and harmonica have become part of El Tri’s signature texture — immediately identifiable and impossible to replicate. Their most recent studio album, Qué Chingon, came out May 5, 2022. The Adicto al Rocanrol Tour runs more than 20 North American dates through November 27; Houston closes out a four-night Texas sweep through San Antonio, Austin, and Irving.
