The Toledo, Ohio band has never operated on trend cycles, and the catalog is the evidence. They came up on raw emo and post-hardcore — Youth in 2013, the unsparing Everybody Is Going to Heaven in 2015 — sharpened into anthemic alternative with As You Please, and arrived at something approaching melodic indie pop on 2023’s Calling the Dogs. Halcyon Blues draws on all of it. Vocalist Mat Kerekes recorded it himself at his home studio; Tom Lorde-Alge handled the mixes. Lead single “Highs and Lows” opens on a dark, pulsating bass line before building into the kind of euphoric chorus that earns the room. Guitarist Nick Hamm put the band’s approach plainly: “We don’t think in moments, or months, or record cycles…there’s always somewhere new to go.” Seventeen years of evidence backs that up.
