Will Downing brings his Still in Love tour to House of Blues Houston on Friday, December 18. The Prince of Sophisticated Soul is four decades into a career built on one principle — stay yourself, regardless of what the charts are doing — and the body of work that’s accumulated around that stance is formidable.
About Will Downing
Born in Brooklyn in 1963, Downing learned the craft from the inside out. Before his solo debut in 1988, his baritone was session furniture on records by Jennifer Holiday, Kool & the Gang, Billy Ocean, and Mariah Carey. That schooling shows in his phrasing — he sings like someone who understands exactly what the studio asks for, and then delivers something better.
He holds a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Album, a Soul Tracks Lifetime Achievement Award, and the distinction of being the most decorated male vocalist in Soul Tracks history. His signature songs — “I Go Crazy,” “Wishing on a Star,” “A Million Ways,” “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This” with Rachelle Ferrell — map the range of a performer who can hold a room equally with an original and a standard.
Downing cites Stevie Wonder, Teddy Pendergrass, and Barry White as his foundation — men who made the voice a commitment, not just an instrument to audition. He survived polymyositis, an auto-immune disease, and has said it clarified what the work already meant to him.
His most recent project, the Still in Love EP, dropped on his birthday in November 2025 — his 29th studio release, self-released on his own Sophisticated Soul label. Five tracks, including the singles “Back to Us” and “Vibe with You,” built around what he’s called “couples therapy” music. Unhurried adult R&B with a jazz spine, made for an audience that’s been listening long enough to know the difference between sophistication and performance.
About House of Blues Houston
House of Blues Houston, at 1204 Caroline St, is the city’s primary stop on the touring soul and R&B circuit. The 1,800-capacity room is right-sized for this kind of show — close enough to read every note, large enough to put a real production behind it. Houston has a deep-running soul history, and when the R&B touring circuit comes through, this is where it lands. For a full Houston concerts calendar, see our Houston listings.
