Wade Bowen is playing House of Blues Houston on Friday, August 28. His eleventh studio album — The Version of Me You Get — comes out September 25. Four weeks away. He will be playing new material before most of his audience has heard it, and that is a particular kind of show.
About Wade Bowen
Bowen has been a fixture on the Texas Country circuit long enough that it is easy to underestimate how much ground he has covered. He came up through Texas Tech, put together West 84 with Matt Miller, and cut his path with Try Not to Listen in 2002. The title track climbed into the Top Ten on the Texas music chart. He played up to 250 dates a year in those early years, building an audience the slow way. If We Ever Make It Home in 2008 broke him wider; a deal at Sony’s BNA imprint followed in 2010. He never left the Texas circuit, which matters. His 2022 record Somewhere Between the Secret and the Truth brought in Lori McKenna and Vince Gill. The Randy Rogers collaborations — four volumes of Hold My Beer — are their own body of work.
The new record took a longer road. Bowen and co-producer Sean McConnell recorded it in 2020, a week in the studio with no outside noise and no deadline, then let it sit for five years. When he pulled it back out, he found the songs had grown into something richer. “It felt more relevant than it did back then,” he said. Lead single “Rain” — co-written with McConnell and Drew Kennedy — came from the stretch that included his 2018 vocal surgery and what followed at home. The chorus lands plainly: “Man did it rain / Like heaven was cryin’ and it couldn’t stop.” Second single “People Like Us” goes the other direction — whiskey-slow and twangy, built around family values and humble living. Ten tracks, out via Thirty Tigers September 25.
About the Venue
House of Blues Houston holds 1,800 and sits on Caroline Street in downtown Houston — a purpose-built concert room, not a dance hall, but the right scale for a pre-release headline run. Bowen follows this show with House of Blues Dallas the next night, a back-to-back Texas weekend dropped squarely in the window before the record drops.
