Stokley at House of Blues Houston | June 21, 2026

Stokley brings his touring solo show to House of Blues Houston on Sunday, June 21. House of Blues is where the R&B circuit comes through — but Stokley Williams carries more than a circuit stop. He spent more than thirty years as the lead singer and drummer of Mint Condition, the Minneapolis band that kept live-instrument R&B performance tradition intact through decades when the genre was moving away from it. He arrives here now with his Jam & Lewis–produced Sankofa catalog and a solo record that has earned its own standing.

About Stokley

Williams was born in St. Paul and built his name with Mint Condition across more than three decades. The group’s run produced hits including “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” and “What Kind of Man Would I Be?” — proper live-instrument R&B, built for rooms. Williams handled lead vocals and played drums simultaneously, which is a specific kind of showmanship. It is the reason his live shows hold up the way they do.

His solo debut arrived in 2017. Sankofa, his second album, came in 2019 through Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’s relaunched Perspective Records — the same partnership that backed Mint Condition during its peak years. The album pulls in H.E.R. (“Rush”), Snoop Dogg (“Vibrant”), The Bonfyre (“Cascade”), and KiDi (“Woman”), blending funk, 1990s-inspired material, and contemporary sounds.

The lead single “She…” hit number one on the Adult R&B Chart in March 2020 after a 29-week climb, outlasting efforts from Chris Brown and Drake along the way. Williams self-produced the track. He was 52 when it landed at the top — as unlikely a chart moment as the format produces. He described the song as capturing the full range of a relationship: “the bad with the good. Good, bad, terrible, ugly, beautiful, all of it.” He earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance in 2011, and in 2024 was cast as Rick James in Super Freak: A Rick James Story, a stage musical that underscored how far his range extends beyond the studio.
