MC Magic, Baby Bash, and Lil Rob have been building Chicano rap and bilingual hip-hop since before most current acts were paying attention. The Latin Legacy Tour brings all three to House of Blues Houston on Saturday, July 11 — and this stop carries some history. Baby Bash built part of his early career in this city, coming up through South Park Mexican and the Lone Star Ridaz before any national audience knew his name. Houston heard it before the rest did.
About the Artists
MC Magic — born Marco Cardenas in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, raised in Avondale, Arizona — is one of the genuine architects of Chicano rap. He came up through NB Ridaz, putting tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 in the late 1990s with “Down for Yours” featuring Roger Troutman and “Lost in Love.” His signature is the talk box and a bilingual delivery that moves cleanly between hip-hop and R&B. His 2006 solo album Magic City hit number one on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart. Magic City Part II followed in 2008 with features from Baby Bash and Too Short — these three have been crossing paths on record for nearly twenty years before this tour put them on the same stage.
Baby Bash — Ronnie Ray Bryant from Vallejo, California — is the crossover name on this bill. His 2007 collaboration “Cyclone” with T-Pain reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and went 3x Platinum. The album Cyclone debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200. Underneath the radio hits, his foundation in Chicano hip-hop runs as deep as anyone’s on this tour.
Lil Rob — Roberto Flores, San Diego, active since 1992 — brings the West Coast lowrider wing of Chicano rap. His 2005 record Twelve Eighteen, Pt. 1 debuted at number two on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart, and “Summer Nights” gave him his first Top 40 entry. The San Diego Padres have recognized him as a Chicano rap pioneer — civic acknowledgment that doesn’t come easily.
