Will Rogers died in an Alaskan plane crash on August 15, 1935, and the Fort Worth complex that carries his name opened the following year, built fast and built grand as part of a Texas Centennial that wanted the state to show the country something. Rogers had been the country’s great humorist: rope tricks in the Ziegfeld Follies, syndicated columns, radio, and enough political satire to earn enemies in Washington and admirers in every county seat from Laramie to Laredo. He made the joke land and let the truth in with it. The building on West Lancaster Avenue is, in that sense, correctly named.
Ninety years on, the biggest comedian currently touring North America brings his Mister Whatever show through those same doors: Friday, October 9, 2026, at Will Rogers Auditorium in Fort Worth. Doors at 6:30 p.m., show at 7:30.
John Mulaney holds four Emmy Awards along with Critics Choice and WGA citations, earned across a career that began with years as a Saturday Night Live staff writer and extended through a run of specials that became genuine cultural touchstones — New in Town, The Comeback Kid, Kid Gorgeous, and then Baby J in 2023, which occupies its own category. That special was a confessional account of addiction and intervention, as precisely constructed as anything Mulaney has put on a stage, and it required the audience to hold the comedy and the cost of the story in the same hand at the same time. The people who showed up tended to remember it.
Mister Whatever is the follow-up, debuted in 2025 and now running well into 2026 on the strength of what has become, by any honest measure, essentially compulsive demand. The previous From Scratch run sold out three nights at Chicago’s United Center — a building that holds north of 20,000 people. This past July 11, Mulaney became the first comedian ever to headline Wrigley Field, which is a sentence that would have drawn a puzzled stare from a comedy booker in 1998 and earns a long, considered look from anyone paying attention now.
The Fort Worth date puts him in Will Rogers Auditorium — capacity 2,856 — which places you considerably closer to the stage than the arena circuit allows. For a comedian whose material runs on precision timing, layered construction, and the slow detonation of the planted detail, the intimacy of a theater is not a step down. It is, in most respects, the better room.
Between legs of the tour, Mulaney has not exactly been idle. He hosted and executive-produced Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney for Netflix. His Broadway production All In: Comedy About Love — alongside Fred Armisen, Richard Kind, and Renee Elise Goldsberry — ran in December 2024. A role in Madden, an Amazon MGM Studios biographical film directed by David O. Russell, is also in the pipeline.

Will Rogers made his name telling America what it looked like from the outside, and doing it in a way that made both the cheap seats and the expensive ones laugh. There is something fitting about a building that carries that name hosting a comedian of comparable reach. The show is Friday, October 9. The room holds fewer than 3,000 people. By the standards of where Mulaney has been playing, that is a small house. Plan accordingly.
