Jack Johnson is back on tour for the first time since 2022, and the booking at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Friday, August 28 tells you exactly where he stands: 16,500-capacity outdoor amphitheater in The Woodlands, first of three consecutive Texas nights. That’s not a hesitant return. The SURFILMUSIC Tour is built around a new documentary and a companion double album — an artist doing the actual work of recontextualizing a two-decade catalog rather than just cashing in on it.
About Jack Johnson
The documentary, SURFILMUSIC, is directed by Emmett Malloy and traces Johnson’s path from the surf films he made in his twenties — Thicker Than Water (1999) and The September Sessions (2000) — to wherever he’s landed now. Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and the Malloy Brothers appear. The companion double album — SURFILMUSIC Soundtrack + 4-Tracks — came out May 15 on Brushfire Records: one disc is the film’s original score, the other is remastered early four-track recordings, some of it previously unreleased.
Producer Mario Caldato Jr. is back in the fold. He worked on In Between Dreams and Sleep Through the Static, and his wider résumé runs through Beastie Boys, Seu Jorge, and Beck. The first single off the project, “Hold On To The Light,” features Hermanos Gutiérrez, who will open multiple dates on the tour. For the August 28 Woodlands show, the support slot goes to Lake Street Dive.
Johnson has released eight studio albums and three live albums.
About The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is a 16,500-capacity outdoor amphitheater in The Woodlands, part of the Houston area’s Xfinity Concert Series calendar. For a touring artist at Johnson’s level, it’s the appropriate room — substantial without tipping into arena-scale indifference. The August 28 date opens a three-night Texas run: Austin the following evening, Dallas on the 30th.
