Four years ago — March 2022, to be precise — Grupo Frontera released an independently-pressed EP of cover songs. Six guys from the McAllen-Edinburg corridor, mostly in their twenties, who had been playing family gatherings and had gotten serious enough to put something out. Eight weeks later they dropped a norteño version of “No Se Va,” a pop track from a Colombian act called Morat, and something happened that doesn’t happen to regional Mexican music very often: it charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
That was the fifth time in the chart’s sixty-plus-year history that a regional Mexican song had made it there. Five times total.

The band — Adelaido “Payo” Solis III (vocals, bajo quinto), Juan Javier Cantú (vocals, accordion), Julian Peña Jr. (percussion), Alberto “Beto” Acosta (bajo quinto), Carlos Guerrero (drums), and Carlos Zamora (bass) — have been direct about what they thought they were doing with the accordion-and-congas arrangement of “No Se Va.” As Cantú told Billboard, the idea was to put a new seasoning on it: “the congas… it doesn’t sound like your typical norteño song; in fact, it sounds like something fresh with that reggaetón vibe.” That combination — bajo quinto, accordion, the rhythmic architecture of regional Mexican music layered with pop and reggaetón textures — is what’s carried them through three Latin Grammy wins, two 2026 Grammy nominations in Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano), and onto the current Triste Pero Bien Cabrón Tour, a 27-date U.S. arena run promoted by Live Nation.
“No Se Va” peaked at No. 3 on Hot Latin Songs. The collaborations that followed — with Carin León, with Fuerza Regida, and most recently with Puerto Rican artist Myke Towers on the title track of their third album, Lo Que Me Falta Por Llorar — brought them to 38 million monthly Spotify listeners and the itinerary they’re running now: Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Moody Center in Austin, Toyota Center in Houston, American Airlines Center in Dallas, then west to Intuit Dome in Los Angeles and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, east to Prudential Center in Newark, and south to Orlando for the U.S. close in September.
The leg opened July 16 in Edinburg, Texas — home — at Bert Ogden Arena. Home crowd, home base, the place they were standing before all of this started. The Austin date lands eight days later.
I’ll say plainly that the norteño and regional Mexican tradition, while it runs through the same Texas soil as everything else I’ve covered in forty years, is not the corner of the map I’ve worked from the inside. What I can say is that what Grupo Frontera has done to the charts in forty-eight months is historically unusual by any genre’s measure. And that the room at Moody Center — fifteen thousand seats — represents something for a band from the Valley that would have been a harder path before this particular moment in the music.
