Chicago and Styx have been playing arenas and sheds since the early ’70s. They’ve just never done it together — until now. The Windy Cities Tour hits The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands on Thursday, August 20, in what both camps are billing as the first co-headlining run in either band’s history. Both acts trace their roots to Chicago. Neither has shared a marquee before. That’s a signal worth noting.

About Chicago

Chicago formed in 1967 — originally The Big Thing, then Chicago Transit Authority, shortened when the actual transit authority pushed back on the name. Nearly six decades of what happens when rock and roll runs through a brass section: “25 or 6 to 4,” “Saturday in the Park,” “If You Leave Me Now,” “Hard to Say I’m Sorry,” “You’re the Inspiration.” Over 100 million records sold worldwide. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, 2016.

Worth knowing going in: the 2026 touring lineup is not the classic one. Pianist and vocalist Robert Lamm and trombonist James Pankow have both retired from the road due to health concerns. Trumpeter Lee Loughnane — the only founding member still performing — leads a professional touring band that includes lead vocalist Neil Donell and a full horn section. The songs will be there. The original cast mostly won’t.

About Styx

Styx also came up in Chicago, forming in 1972. They were the first band in history to release four consecutive triple-platinum albums. Paradise Theatre hit No. 1 on the Billboard pop albums chart. “Come Sail Away,” “Renegade,” “Mr. Roboto,” “Too Much Time on My Hands” — catalog that earns an outdoor room. Their 18th studio album, Circling from Above, arrived in 2025.

Tommy Shaw on the pairing: “The idea of Styx touring with Chicago is a major thrill all on its own.” Lee Loughnane: “Chicago has never toured with Styx before so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The Venue

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion holds 16,500 — covered reserved seating, uncovered reserved, and a sprawling lawn suited to exactly this kind of summer double-bill. Ranked the second-most heavily used amphitheater in the world, it has served as the Houston Symphony’s summer home since opening in April 1990. For a Houston-area catalog show running three-plus hours, the room fits.

The Windy Cities Tour runs July 13 through September 6 across 24 cities. Plan for approximately three to three-and-a-half hours including intermission — each band plays roughly 90 minutes. Showtime is 7:00 PM. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
