Akeem Ali spent years building toward this tour the long way. He started writing rhymes as a teenager in Jackson, Mississippi, did a stint in the military, went to barber school, and eventually moved to Atlanta in 2016 to pursue the music full-time. He built early momentum through Instagram freestyles and appearances on the 85 South podcast, then dropped “Keemy Casanova” in 2020, a throwback 70s soul single that went viral and introduced the alter ego that still runs through everything he makes. The Texture Tour, behind The Texture Tape III Starring Keemy Casanova, comes to House of Blues Houston on Sunday, October 11.
About the Show
The Houston date is part of a 40-plus-city run that spans from the South to the West Coast, through the Midwest and Canada, and back to the East Coast. The concept behind it is worth laying out: the Texture Tape series frames Ali’s lyricism through the lens of fabric textures, blending “the comparison of clothing textures with the sounds of sultry production and witty lyricism,” his words, into what he calls synesthesia. His arc runs from backpack rapper to “70s exploitation maestro” to a deliberate synthesis of both, and three installments in, the concept keeps generating material.
The features on his 2026 album Hold Please signal where Ali stands in the southern conversation: T.I., Big K.R.I.T., and Big Boi, billed as Southern legends. He relocated from Jackson to Atlanta in 2016 to take the music seriously; those co-signs suggest the work paid off. A Substack review of The Texture Tapes 1 and 2 gave them 8.7 out of 10 with “no skips,” crediting Ali for bringing back “Mississippi soul with 70’s pumping from time to time” and “the essence of a cool slick pimp with very witty bars.” Tracks like “Suede” and “Felt” are where those descriptions become specific. He brands himself “The Greatest Rapper Alive” and calls the tour built for “real music lovers who appreciate texture, soul, and artistry.” He played his homecoming at Hal & Mal’s in Jackson on October 7.
