Weezer’s 16th studio album was made the old way — all four members in the same room, no click track, no tempo grid, every track started with them playing simultaneously. The sessions drew tonal inspiration from Kyuss. Put that alongside the band that released “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain’t So” on Geffen in 1994, and the distance between those two versions of Weezer is exactly what makes their Saturday night at American Airlines Center worth showing up for.
About the Show
The tour is “Weezer: The Gathering,” a 32-city all-arena run from Sept. 8 through Oct. 24, with The Shins and Silversun Pickups opening every date. Dallas gets the middle night of the band’s Texas sweep: Houston played Toyota Center the night before (Oct. 16), and Austin’s Moody Center follows the night after (Oct. 18).
The album this tour supports is Weezer’s new self-titled record, their 16th and first for Reprise/Warner Records, due Aug. 21. Lead single “Shine Again” reached fans on April 1, first distributed on USB drives at an intimate rooftop show before wider release; it was written by drummer Patrick Wilson, with Rivers Cuomo singing over what Billboard called “a hammer drill guitar and steady beat.” A second single, “We Might As Well Be Strangers,” followed. Both tracks came from sessions produced by Kenneth Blume (whose credits include Geese’s 2025 album Getting Killed) and Klas Åhlund; Blume noted he researched Weezer’s 2016 White Album before the sessions, approaching the project without prior familiarity with the band’s catalog. The recordings were made without a click track or tempo grid, drawing from desert rock for tone, Kyuss cited as a specific touchstone.
Weezer has been at this since their 1992 formation in Los Angeles, the core lineup of Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Brian Bell, and Scott Shriner stable since 2001. Their catalog runs from the Blue Album’s breakout singles through the cult-classic Pinkerton (1996), OK Human and Van Weezer (both 2021), the four-part SZNZ EP series of 2022, and a collection of remastered early demos and rarities issued for Record Store Day 2026. The self-titled record due Aug. 21 is their first under a new label and the first to arrive having been cut entirely live in the room.
