In the spring of 1994, during a commercial break in the Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Dublin, something happened that most people in television would have said was impossible: seven minutes of Irish step dancing stopped a continent where it stood. The performers were assembled by director John McColgan and producer Moya Doherty, the music was Bill Whelan’s, and the act was called Riverdance. It wasn’t supposed to be more than an interval piece. Thirty years and more than thirty million live audience members later, it is still here — and Riverdance 30: The New Generation brings its 67-city US tour to the Majestic Theatre San Antonio on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at 7:30 PM.
About Riverdance
What happened in those seven minutes in Dublin became, within a year, a full theatrical production — premiering in the Irish capital in 1995, then arriving in New York in March 1996 for eight sold-out nights at Radio City Music Hall. The show that was never meant to outlast an intermission has since been seen by more than thirty million people on stages around the world. The Grammy award-winning score by composer Bill Whelan — its percussion-driven rhythms, Celtic melodic lines, and blended Irish and international elements — remains the show’s spine. Director McColgan has put it plainly: “The show has developed from a stage spectacle into a global cultural phenomenon.”
The 30th Anniversary edition brings something genuinely new alongside the familiar. For the first time in the production’s history, every dancer in The New Generation cast was born after Riverdance’s 1994 debut. They have grown up with the show as an established cultural fact rather than a revelation — and McColgan has built this anniversary production around that generational reality, with new innovative choreography, updated costumes, and state-of-the-art lighting, projection, and motion graphics. The creative team includes lead designer Peter Canning, set designer Alan Farquharson, lighting designer Andrew Voller, and costume designer Joan Bergin. This is a production that knows exactly what it is and where it came from, and uses that knowledge to move forward rather than simply repeat itself.
The 2026 US tour launched in January in Sarasota, Florida and has been running across 67 American cities through the spring. The San Antonio dates are among the final stops. Runtime is two hours, including one intermission.
