Guitarist Scott Holiday’s framing for why Rival Sons are running a domestic club circuit this fall was straightforward: “We weren’t able to tour the U.S. properly on the last two records, so it’s going to be great to get back to some of those territories we missed.” The records in question — DARKFIGHTER and LIGHTBRINGER — both landed in 2023, produced by Dave Cobb at studios including RCA Studio A and Muscle Shoals Sound, and both got limited North American live support.
About the Show
The Grammy-nominated California quartet plays Emo’s Austin on Monday, Nov. 9, with the show starting at 7 p.m. The Domestic Bliss Tour spans 24 U.S. dates from October 30 through late November. Frontman Jay Buchanan set the tone for the run: “A lot of irons in the RIVAL SONS fire right now but we wanted to break off a quick one domestically.” The band — Buchanan on vocals, Holiday on lead guitar, Dave Beste on bass, Michael Miley on drums — is drawing from a nine-album catalog that includes two Grammy nominations for FERAL ROOTS (2019): Best Rock Album and Best Rock Performance for “Too Bad.” Their single “Do Your Worst” also topped Rock Radio.
Holiday has said the band plans to “mix it up and try to play songs from across the catalog” — which for a group with material dating to 2011’s Pressure & Time means the set could range widely.
Canadian blues rock duo The Blue Stones and Colorado rock trio The Velveteers support most dates on the run, Austin included.
The band has shared stages with AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, and the Rolling Stones, and was hand-picked by Black Sabbath for their farewell tour. The Domestic Bliss run reads, in that context, as a deliberate choice to scale back and cover U.S. ground the last couple albums didn’t reach.
Buchanan’s solo debut, Weapons of Beauty, debuted at No. 10 on the U.S. Americana chart this year. The band is also at work on a new studio album, expected in 2027, with Miley describing early sessions as “coming along differently” than previous records.
Venue & Logistics
Emo’s Austin, on East Riverside Drive, is a mid-size club that routes national touring acts through the Austin market regularly. The room handles the kind of loud, guitar-forward rock Rival Sons play without apology.
