“Sad in Carolina” spent seven weeks at No. 1 on U.S. Alternative radio, and Dexter and The Moonrocks did it as four former blue-collar workers from a West Texas town of about 700 people: a fry cook, an oil field operator, a concrete surface decorator, and a kids’ baseball coach, writing songs out of Abilene until one of them cracked a national chart. They play Emo’s Austin on Thursday, November 19, the first of two consecutive nights in Austin.
About the Show
The four-piece (James Tuffs on vocals and rhythm guitar, Ryan Anderson on lead guitar, Ty Anderson on bass, and Fox on drums) coined “Western Space Grunge” before they had a record deal, building a following that started with their 2021 debut single “Couch.” The name describes something real: they blend the country and western of their childhoods with the grunge they fell in love with as teenagers, drawing from Nirvana and Foo Fighters alongside Whiskey Myers and Tyler Childers. Their own framing of the genre is direct: “Grunge and country are honestly so similar. Both speak to the oppressed and the depressed.” Their press material adds “raw energy, storytelling traditions, and a touch of alien influence” to the description — which earns the space-themed genre tag more than a little credibility. Severance Records, a Nashville-based imprint of Big Loud Rock, signed them as the label’s flagship act in 2024. Their debut album Western Space Grunge followed that July; EP Happy to Be Here came out in May 2025. Current single “Ritalin” is described by the label as “a stadium-ready anthem.” Support comes from Cigarettes @ Sunset and High June.
Venue & Logistics
Emo’s Austin holds the show at 7:00 p.m. Two consecutive nights at a 1,700-cap room, November 19 and 20, reflect where the band actually is: more than 50 million streams and multiple sold-out shows nationally have a way of earning that kind of booking. A Pre-Doors Patio upgrade is available separately from the main concert ticket.
