PJ Morton grew up on the fault line between the juke joint and the church (New Orleans soul musician, son of gospel singer Bishop Paul S. Morton) and spent his career being asked to pick a side. He never did. Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, his new double album, says so plainly: nine R&B tracks on one half, nine gospel on the other, both halves clocking in at exactly 29:14. “I’d always been made to choose,” Morton said of the project. “But I didn’t want to choose this time.” The show he’s built around that argument runs 30 dates across North America. One of them lands October 30 in Houston.
About the Show
The Saturday Night Sunday Morning Tour hits Bayou Music Center at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30. The double album, released on Juneteenth 2026, was written and produced entirely by Morton at Studio In The Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Featured collaborators include saxophonist Keyon Harrold and vocalist Rukhsana Merrise; the touring production adds live strings and horns. Lead singles are “Mutual” from the R&B half and “Mercy” from the gospel side.
Morton has earned the nickname “Live Show Killer” across thousands of concerts throughout his career. He holds six Grammy Awards (Best R&B Song and Best Gospel Album among them) and 22 nominations. He spent 15 years as a full-time keyboardist for Maroon 5, performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and became the first Black composer to write an original song for a Disney attraction, contributing to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. He runs Morton Records and the Bogalusa studio where the album was recorded. His collaborators across the catalog include Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Jon Batiste, and Nas. He has also published a memoir under the same title as the album. The tour closes November 27 with his annual Black Friday concert at the Orpheum Theater in New Orleans — a homecoming after a year that put him on stages at Rock in Rio in Brazil.
