When J’Nique Nicole became the first Black video game soundtrack vocalist to perform at Carnegie Hall, she was singing music that a great many serious concert programmers would have turned away a generation earlier. That the NieR score now fills rooms of that caliber says something about how the argument has shifted. She and Emi Evans return as original vocalists for NieR:Orchestra Concert 12026 [YoRHa], coming to Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land on Saturday, December 19, with conductor Eric Roth leading the World Festival Orchestra & Chorus. This production — a follow-up to 2024’s NieR:Orchestra Concert 12024 [the end of data] — is the work of AWR Music Productions and Square Enix, and it goes well beyond what a highlights concert usually attempts. Cinematic visuals run throughout; a new narrated story presents the Pearl Harbor Descent Operation, a prequel narrative to NieR:Automata, voiced by original Japanese cast members Yui Ishikawa (No.2), Reina Tanaka (No.4), Mio Hanana (No.21), and Chihira Mochida (No.16). The World Festival Orchestra & Chorus backs Evans and Nicole in full. The production runs approximately two and a half hours.
About the Concert
Emi Evans, Tokyo-based and English by birth, developed the Chaos Language technique — a constructed phonetic idiom built to carry the emotional register of Keiichi Okabe’s NieR compositions without anchoring them to any recognizable language. The effect is disorienting in the best sense: you cannot locate yourself culturally, which leaves you fully inside the music. J’Nique Nicole, Nashville-born and Tokyo-based, sang the English-language version of NieR:Automata‘s signature theme and brings into this concert the weight of having introduced that score to Carnegie Hall.
Conductor Eric Roth is not new to this territory. He serves as music director for A New World: intimate music from FINAL FANTASY and associate director for Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY — the touring franchise that has been making the case for orchestral game scores in concert halls for years. His presence signals a level of production seriousness the format does not always receive. The music comes from composer Keiichi Okabe; director Yoko Taro and producer Yosuke Saito are listed as potential special-guest appearances at select stops on the tour. The Sugar Land date on December 19 is among the final North American stops of a run that has moved through Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, and Boston since August.
