Melanie Martinez is bringing an arena-scale tour to American Airlines Center on August 2, and she’s been clear about what she’s attempting: an immersive, cinematic experience that operates on a scale entirely different from her previous live work.
“When writing Hades, I knew the tour for this album had to be immersive and cinematic,” she said when the HADES: THE SACRIFICE tour was announced in April. “Creating a new character and thinking of how she’ll be performing in this new world is so exciting. This tour is very different to anything I’ve done before and involves more practical elements and camera illusions.”
That’s what you’re looking at on August 2—a 26-date North American and international arena circuit supporting her fourth studio album, HADES, that spans from St. Paul in mid-July through late September and continues into Europe through October. Dallas is positioned midway through the North American leg, two days before she takes the same production across the freeway to Austin on August 3.
The American Airlines Center, which opened in 2001 and serves as home to the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars, sits at the heart of the DFW live music ecosystem. With a capacity that ranges from roughly 18,500 to 21,000 depending on configuration, it’s the venue where touring acts at this scale have played Dallas for a quarter-century.
