When La La Land opened in December 2016, it landed the way the best American movie musicals do — like an argument you didn’t know you were ready to have. Damien Chazelle made a film about jazz preservation and romantic compromise and the cost of ambition, wrapped it in the Technicolor grammar of the classic Hollywood musical, and got millions of people arguing passionately in the lobby on the way out. Justin Hurwitz’s score was the engine of all of it: lyrical, nostalgic, technically demanding, and shot through with the specific melancholy of Los Angeles at the magic hour.
Ten years later, that score is coming off the screen — live, in full orchestral force, at one of the finest concert halls in Texas. La La Land In Concert: A Live-To-Film Celebration plays the Majestic Theatre San Antonio on Saturday, February 13, 2027, with performances at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM CT.

The 10th anniversary global tour is produced by Hurwitz Concerts — the company founded by the film’s composer — and the format is what the live-to-film circuit has been building toward: the full film plays on screen while a 100-piece symphony orchestra, chorus, and jazz ensemble performs Hurwitz’s Academy Award-winning score live. Many of the musicians onstage are the same players who recorded the original soundtrack. Not a tribute ensemble. The people who actually made it.
Hurwitz conducts. That matters. He composed the music, shaped every recorded phrase, and now moves through it night after night with the players who built it alongside him. “I’m really excited for people to see the musicians who made the music,” he said when the tour launched. “It’s a score that gives a lot of individuality to the player.” The soloistic moments are real — oboes, flutes, and clarinets trading expressive lines — not buried in section work. You hear the players.
The show’s signature is the live pianist performing in lockstep with Ryan Gosling’s on-screen Sebastian, synchronized note for note, spotlit with a filmed close-up of the hands. Those unaccompanied piano sequences carry so much of Sebastian’s grief and stubbornness — the music he refuses to give up even when the room is half-empty and the gig doesn’t pay. Watching a live musician make it happen in real time changes the weight of those scenes. That’s the argument for the live-to-film format at its best: not novelty, but revelation.
The original vocal recordings from Gosling and Emma Stone are preserved and woven into the live performance. The film won six Academy Awards at the 89th Oscars — Best Director for Chazelle, Best Actress for Stone, Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“City of Stars”) for Hurwitz, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design. The San Antonio stop is part of a tour spanning multiple continents through 2027, with dates across North America, Europe, and Asia.

The Majestic Theatre at 224 E. Houston Street is one of the great rooms in Texas — a 2,264-seat house with the kind of architectural presence that reminds you going out used to mean something as an occasion. The program fits. A film drenched in the romance of a specific era, performed by a full orchestra, deserves a hall built for exactly this kind of spectacle. San Antonio’s concert calendar has a long tradition of bringing orchestral and touring productions to the Majestic, and this is the kind of event the room was made for.
