The songs they made are so deeply embedded in the American jukebox that you can hear them at a minor league baseball game, a high school reunion, and the last dive bar in any flyover city on the same weekend. That durability is worth sitting with as Journey rolls into Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Saturday, October 10 — billed as “An Evening with Journey,” no opener, doors at 6:00 PM, show at 7:30 — as the Final Frontier Tour makes its Texas debut stop.
Journey formed in San Francisco in 1973, initially an instrumental outfit assembled by guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Gregg Rolie out of the Santana diaspora. The pivot toward arena pop came in 1977 with the addition of Steve Perry, who turned out to be one of the defining pop-rock voices of the following decade — and whose departure in the mid-1990s cast a shadow over everything that came after. Perry was not coming back. He made that plain.
What happened instead, in 2007, was the discovery of Arnel Pineda — a Filipino singer surfaced through YouTube whose range matched the catalog note for note and whose stage hunger matched the rooms Journey plays. Pineda has been fronting the band for nearly twenty years now. The skepticism that greeted his hiring has largely dissolved under the weight of what he actually delivers each night, and the “An Evening with” format — extended setlist, deep cuts running alongside “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Wheel in the Sky” and “Open Arms,” no support act eating into the clock — gives him the room to demonstrate it.
The current six-member lineup: Schon on lead guitar (the only surviving founding member), Jonathan Cain on keys, Pineda on vocals, Deen Castronovo on drums, Jason Derlatka on keys, Todd Jensen on bass. Schon told Rolling Stone the crowd energy on this run has been “incredible every night” and that “seeing these crowds sing these songs with us after all these years has been powerful.” Cain added that the songs “continue to connect with people in such a meaningful way.” Hard to argue. Nineteen top 40 singles. Nearly a hundred million albums sold globally. The Greatest Hits album is 15×-Platinum certified. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, 2017.
Whether this constitutes a genuine farewell remains an open question — the band has dates running into 2027 and has not announced a final show — but the “Final Frontier” framing is deliberate, and this fall extension represents the tour’s most ambitious leg: forty additional North American dates running September through late November. San Antonio is one of three Texas stops in the run, with Houston following on November 18 and Dallas on November 20.
