What Lin-Manuel Miranda understood when he wrote Hamilton is what any good rapper knows: the verse is the argument. You don’t summarize the case — you make it, bar by bar, in the room. The show uses hip-hop syntax, structure, and cadence to tell an 18th-century story about a man who wrote his way into American history, and the match between the form and the subject isn’t decorative. It’s structural. The founding era’s ambition and violence inside the rhythmic frame of the music that’s been doing the same work in American cities for fifty years. Ten years since it opened on Broadway and the argument still holds.
The North American Tour plays the Majestic Theatre starting Tuesday, July 28, running through August 9.
Tyler Fauntleroy carries the title role — Hamilton, the immigrant from Nevis who landed in New York and willed himself into the center of American power. Jimmie “J.J.” Jeter plays Aaron Burr: the narrator, the rival, the man who ends up defining Hamilton by everything he can’t bring himself to become. Marja Harmon is Angelica Schuyler, Lily Soto is Eliza, A.D. Weaver is Washington, Matt Bittner is King George III. Thomas Kail directed. Andy Blankenbuehler’s choreography is built to hold the pace the score demands — and the score demands a lot. The book, music, and lyrics are all Miranda’s, based on Ron Chernow’s biography of the first Treasury Secretary.
The production has collected eleven Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Grammy and Olivier recognition, and a special Kennedy Center Honors citation. This tour marks ten years on Broadway.
The Majestic is the right room for it. A 1929 Spanish Mediterranean atmospheric theatre designed by John Eberson — National Historic Landmark, capacity 2,264, ceiling painted like a night sky, walls dressed like an open Mediterranean courtyard. San Antonio’s highest-profile seated theater room, and one of the genuinely beautiful rooms left in Texas. The tour moves here directly from Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, the Texas leg of a run that continues through 2027.
Performances run multiple nights per week throughout the two-and-a-half-week engagement. Each show runs 2 hours and 45 minutes with one intermission. GalaPro accessibility services are available for the entire San Antonio run.
