Lin-Manuel Miranda built Hamilton on hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway — the first three of which are Black American musical forms — and the structural choice still holds up. The Angelica Company touring production comes to Majestic Theatre in San Antonio on Saturday, August 1 at 2:00 PM, part of a two-week run that stretches through August 9.
The show has been circling the country for more than a decade. The reason it still fills houses isn’t the novelty — that wore off years ago. It’s the craft. Miranda wrote hip-hop into the bones of the drama, not as flavor but as form: the arguments happen in rap, the character reveals happen in rap, the historical turning points happen in rap. “The Room Where It Happens,” “My Shot,” “Wait for It” — these aren’t songs attached to scenes. They are the scenes. That precision is why the show travels.
The premise: Alexander Hamilton, immigrant from the West Indies, becomes George Washington’s most essential aide during the Revolutionary War and the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. The cast is people of color. The music is theirs. The story of who built America and who gets to tell it is the point.
