Aries Spears was sixteen years old the first time he walked onstage — not at a polished showcase, but at the Uptown Comedy Cafe in Harlem, doing impressions of James Brown and Jack Nicholson for a room that had no particular obligation to take him seriously. They took him seriously. Within a few years he was appearing on Def Comedy Jam and Showtime at the Apollo, landing spots most comedians spend a decade working toward. Now thirty years on from those first Harlem sets, Spears brings a fully refreshed stand-up hour to Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land on Friday, January 29, 2027, with an 8:00 PM curtain.
About Aries Spears
Born in Chicago in 1975 and raised in New York, Spears built his early reputation in the rooms that defined 1990s stand-up: The Comedy Store, The Improv, The Laugh Factory. He joined the cast of Fox’s MADtv in 1997, and over eight seasons logged 198 episodes — the second-longest tenure in the show’s history. The impressions he developed there have become shorthand for what he does: Jay-Z, Denzel Washington, Shaquille O’Neal, Eddie Murphy, James Brown, Al Pacino, Mike Tyson. But Spears has always been more than an impressions showcase. He works the territory where pop culture, race, and relationships intersect, with the rhythm of someone who came up on hip-hop and the timing of someone who’s been doing this since before most of his current audience was born.
His 2011 special, Aries Spears: Hollywood, Look I’m Smiling, stands as a document of that full range. The current tour features a refreshed hour built across 2024 and 2025 — and by all accounts from 2026 dates, including two sold-out shows at the Miami Improv, an act performing at high confidence. He currently co-hosts the podcast Spears & Steinberg: The Jew and The Jerk.
The Sugar Land date sits inside a theater-level January swing: Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater on the 22nd, The Parker in Fort Lauderdale on the 23rd, then west to Texas on the 29th, then north to the State Theatre in Minneapolis on the 30th. It follows a fall 2026 European run that included the O2 Forum in London, the Ambassador in Dublin, and the Meervaart in Amsterdam. Comedians who move at that pace, through those rooms, are performing at the top of their range.
