Blackberry Smoke has been one of Southern rock’s steadiest working bands for twenty-five years â more than 2,000 shows, seven albums, and enough miles on the Southern circuit to have built a fanbase that calls itself “The Brethren.” The 25th Anniversary Tour is the milestone lap, though it runs with a shadow: drummer Brit Turner died in March 2024 from glioblastoma at 57, and the band plays Houston on October 10 as a four-piece.
About the Show
Formed in Atlanta around 2000, the band put in the work before anyone paid attention: opening slots for Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, the Zac Brown Band, and George Jones before The Whippoorwill (2012) broke through at number 40 on the Billboard Top 200 and number eight on the country charts. Two number-one country albums followed in 2015 and 2016. You Hear Georgia topped the Americana/Folk chart in 2021. They’ve played Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Glastonbury. Their sound has been called “Southern rock, blues-leaning classic rock, swampy psychedelica, and rootsy vintage country” (rooted in Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, built into something through twenty-five years of playing it live every night).
The Houston date runs behind Be Right Here (2024), recorded at RCA Studio A in Nashville under Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb. Cobb pushed the band to track all together in one room rather than in isolation, closer to how they sound on any given night than what most studio albums allow. That approach traced Turner’s own operating philosophy: “We’re firm believers in not overthinking much. I think people can tamper with the music so much that it doesn’t sound real.” Starr called the early sessions “terrifying.” Then: “You could just see the excitement starting; it was tangible.” Charlie Starr (vocals, guitar), Paul Jackson (guitar), Richard Turner (bass), and Brandon Still (keyboards) make up the current lineup. No support acts are listed for this date. VIP packages include a preshow performance, photo op, autographed poster, and merchandise; a portion of proceeds benefits the Brit Turner Family Fund at CURE Childhood Cancer.
